in some places there was complete genocide, like the british islands. modern brits barely have any ancestry from the people that built stonehenge. a possibility is indoeuropeans brought diseases that european neolithic farmers had no defenses against, and that gave them a big advantage, like in the spanish conquest of the americas. the black plague that killed a third of europeans was also brought by steppe people, the mongols.
ever since the indoeuropeanization of europe, europeans have been mostly a mixture of iron age steppe people and neolithic farmers, more steppe in northern europe, and more neolithic farmer in the south (because the population density was much higher there back then, northern europe had a very low population density until the middle ages, so it was easier for newcomers to replace the locals).
