How is it decided whether or not a living thing is sentient?
Is it possible for a complex organism like a large mammal to not be sentient? How would you prove this?

They argued about this when deciding what consciousness is. Iirc bacteria made the first cut but then a lot of dudes got assmad and then they removed it from the list. Look up shit like qualia if you want more reading on the subject. It seems the more intelligent something is, the more "conscious" it is.

As a shortcut, just look up higher consciousness and go with the German idealists.
