In terms of chemistry, is steel is a metal?

According to chemistry, does steel technically count as a metal? Chemistry says that steel is iron+carbon and that iron is a metal and carbon isn't. That would be ionic bonding and not metallic bonding so therefore steel technically isn't a metal. Is that correct?

Considering that ultra-high-carbon steel is ~1% carbon and 99% iron couldn't steel be considered iron with impurities?

steel is ferrous. containing iron. mild steel has 0.35 carbon content. ship iron or SA70 has 0.45 carbon content. Is one non ferrous and the other not?

~1% is the highest you'll get in "steel", beyond that it's too brittle for the things steel is used for. There is a bit of a gap to cast iron because between 1% and 2% it's brittle without being castable.

More specifically, its an interstitial alloy, where the carbon sits in the gaps between iron atoms. The carbon does react forming Iron carbides as >>13908179 mentions. The carbon in steel can react with hydrogen o form methane which makes cracks in hydrogen pressure vessels or porosity in welds. Steel is weird.
