The functions 2a and a^2 cross over at a=2. Below a=2 the function 2a is bigger than the function a^2. Above a=2 the function 2a is smaller than the function a^2.

1.5 + 1.5 = (1 + 0.5) + (1 + 0.5)
(1 + 0.5) + (1 + 0.5) = (1 + 1) + (0.5 + 0.5) = 2 + 1 = 3

1.5 *1.5 = (15/10)*(15/10) = (15*15)/(10*10) = (225)/(100) = 2.25

because 1.5 + 1.5 = 2*1.5 which is more than 1.5 * 1.5 because 2 > 1.5.

When you multiply 1.5 by 1.5, what you're doing is adding half of 1.5 to itself. Half of 1.5 is 0.75, and 1.5 + 0.75 = 2.25. QED /thread
