I heard stories of people hanging themselves and breaking their necks, but still being conscious. So I am asking: Does breaking your neck kill you, or rather paralyzes you?

If you sever your spinal cord you'll just be paralyzed, but breaking your neck doesn't necessarily sever your spinal cord.

There are two hanging methods employed called the long drop and the short drop. The short drop is pretty much never used and the amount of force on your neck is only enough to suffocate you, or maybe break your neck yes. The long drop is what's used and it applies enough pressure to cleanly sever the spinal cord in one go. The long drop is actually really important or you could survive and use whoever's was executing you.

Basically a bunch of rich white people figured out the minimum rope length for someone of a certain weight so that they die pretty much immediately when they hit the "end of the line" so to speak.
