I've always learned that the more transmissible a strain is, the less deadly it is.

Delta was 10 times more transmissible than the original strain, and now Omicron is 10 times more transmissible than the Omicron strain.

So why are we worried about it now, since it should be much, much less deadly than what we faced before?

i remember looking into this and i think the only source that said this was some washington post infographic where a reporter drew a box on the CDC chart. in powerpoint which then got passed around all over the internet. pic related

I don't think there's any reason to assume that omicron would be more or less deadly since it's a extremely divergent variant that probably evolved in isolation among immunocompromised people.

Viruses don't have to adapt to be less lethal to be successful if it doesn't hinder their ability to transmit, rabies has a fatality rate of 99% but it can transmit fast enough to survive. Also the average age in Africa is 18 and most of them are physically fit, even though they have a weakened immune system covid isn't a death sentence for them.

we don't know how much more transmissible it actually is, we only just recently discovered the variant and more investigation needs to be done. what we do know is that it has 43 spike protein mutations compared to delta's 18 mutations, and many fear that it may reduce the efficiency of vaccines.

That's what generally happens but sometimes it goes the other way, just not often. But it's difficult to know in this case because we're tinkering with the environment so heavily.
Two things are apparent: the media hopes this kills billions. That's good for ratings so they're going to tell you its the worst virus in history. The second is that many people beyond the media are heavily invested in keeping the pandemic going for as long as possible. I've seen lots and lots of creative scenario building over the last couple of days as to why this is going to be the worst variant along with spin to push everyone to get injections that appear to be ineffective against this variant. There's a strong sense of panic in the injection community so I'm guessing something they don't want to be known soon will be.
Bottom line is that it will take a bit of time (two more weeks!) to get reasonable data on omicron. Even when that happens, you're going to have to battle through lots of misinformation to get at it. No one benefiting from the pandemic is going to willfully allow the panic to decline.

Yeah well that's a bunch of bullshit to fear monger the population. Delta infects more people than Alpha or Zero but it's far less lethal on individual cases. The Technical Briefings clearly showcased this in the first reports and continue to do if you check CFR for unvaxxed.

i think it's the immune response that fucks people over. if someone with AIDS had covid, especially if they were getting treatment, then that's exactly the kind of situation that would let them stay infected for months and not die.
