The Wright brothers did the first CONTROLLED powered aircraft flight.
What does that mean?
It means there were control surfaces that actually worked and steering was predictable and controllable.
Dumont well its sorta cool but built a flying box.
In the end the brothers made the aircraft industry possible.
Now the Wright brothers were called frauds because they had applied for control surface patents but they would not demonstrate their aircraft in public until the patents were approved.
Then in 1907 when it was sorted out, they finally did. And by that time they had four years of additional work done on the control systems.
Men cried and women swooned and fainted at the public demonstrations.
In just 10 years the airplane went from a demonstration marvel to a weapon of war (1907 - 1917 [Year of the Sopwith camel and Fokker DR1])
That is actually quite astonishing.
