I just ordered pic related. I heard the 3rd edition was garbage and the new author ruined it.

Also, heard that both editions have a big errata. Neftci had one on his website apparently, but it doesn't exist anymore. if any anon knows of it please post it for me

Also this book is pretty nice. I like the authors explanations a lot. Its a little old timey feeling though, but once I get started on my math degree I'll probably be reading much older stuff anyways.

how can you ruin a book that is literally a copy-paste with some alterations?
what, did he add too many pictures and explained too much?
newer editions usually discard garbage and add new things, so they tend to be an improvement. i fail to see how it could be made worse. sounds to me like the bitch/es that lost the book deal went on a whining spree 'cause they wanted more easy royalty money.

Everytime I pick up a textbook lately, I'm realising I'm a brainlet.

If it's basic stuff, I just don't have the patience for it. I already know this, why do I need to go into details of how to hold a pen, I just want to learn how to calculate that function. There's this weird resistence that kicks in, and I lose patience before I get to new material.

At the same time, if I grab "Advanced" level, then I either need to look shit up online to catch up, or just give up, and try and look for the lower tier information.

How do people have the motivation to re-read same old boring shit to get to the good parts?
Or rather, how come I lost the ability to stay focussed?

Apparently the new author tried to update the notation and introduced a lot of new typos.

Also he tried to introduce new topics and he's not as good at explaining things as the original author.

Disagree entirely. I prefer to buy the oldest edition of a book as it’s the closest to the original substance. The proofs are usually the same or have a more soulful approach. Modern textbooks are a bog with little direction, designed against self-teaching.

Intro. to Topologcal Manifolds is a pretty good
textbook for topology, but it is rather dense to pick
up if you have a short semester to work with.

The other textbooks from the classes I had or
from office clearings that I come across.
And there are some that I could recommend.

The Probability Models and the Probability and
Random Processes books were used for the
advanced probability courses I had. Both are
very good, but I find the Probability Models
book more inclined to different applications and
a bit wordier of the two. If you like random
processes, what I found challenging, these two
you can use.

Finite mathematics deals with, in general, topics
of math using discrete, finite numbers.
For example, linear algebra, combinatorics,
sequences and series, etc. Some of these topics
can be found in algebra or in precalculus.

My favourite text book of all time still is Volume 1 of Reed & Simon. It's one of the few books that managed to give a rigorous treatment of the topic while largely sticking to topics you need in physics. It's a shame that it's virtually impossible to get a cheap copy of it.

If you love trigonometry, linear algebra, and Kerbal Space Program, you should get this book. It's typically regarded as the canonical text on the subject of astrodynamics.

Anyone who has an undergrad education in engineering/physics/math can use this book. It's very clearly written and the derivations are easy to follow.

If you know any programming at all it will also be extremely useful. The best way to use the math in this book is to automate it and play around with it, and the book is actually geared toward doing just that.

It was written in 1971 so sometimes the units are a little wonky (centimeter-gram-second system) and their rounding errors reveal the answers were computed with trig tables and sliderule, but it's no problem. Just adds to the charm.

In general, the book provides both the mathematics for the full practical computation of astrodynamics in real life but also provides the simplified equations that are valid for the kind of approximate solutions that are perfect for Kerbal Space Program. So, the book is useful for beginner and advanced skill levels.

The authors are extremely proud of their Universal Variable solution to the Kepler Problem which is a goddamn blizzard of obscure math but the derivation is clear enough that you should be able to translate it to a computer algorithm without much trouble. The more limited classical solution to the Kepler Problem is also provided and I find it is much more accessible for someone like me whose math skill is more limited.

No, you'll basically have no examples in your knowledge to make any concepts in category theory intuitive. Learn way more algebra than Pinter's book and some algebraic topology.

Already did a search and could only find the second edition and the first fifteen pages of the third edition.

No. Most of those are completely unrelated. If you don't know how to do proofs and/or linear algebra then learn that first or you'll be completely lost.

I don't think there's any point in learning category theory unless you've seen enough algebra to know why it's useful.

You can’t sustain that level of focus needed to achieve competence in advanced mathematics unless your love for the subject supersedes all of the opportunity costs of studying instead of doing anything else. It takes years and sweat and tears to get that good at anything worthwhile. Brainlet and genius alike are not qualities, but frames of mind; not actions, but habits. I have no doubt that you can achieve excellence in mathematics. However, I strongly recommend that you do some soul-searching and seriously consider whether and how much you’re willing to sacrifice for that.

You could finish a single textbook in 4 to 6 months if you completely focused for 2 hours a day, that's 14 hours a week times 28 weeks makes 392 hours in 6 months.

I wouldn't study in hours, I would study in pages or subsections,like each day finish reading a subsection then the following day attempt and solve successfully the problems you can do in that subsection for the following days, you could get one chapter finished this way in two weeks max, so of your book has 8 chapters that would take you 16 weeks or 4 months to finish a book.

Don't think of hours, that's not how it works, first read the subsection fully, then some problems for that sections, then reread that subsection when stuck on problems, as long as you finish a chapter in 2 weeks or a month you're doing great, as you read the textbook you'll learn to read faster and solve faster, that's your brain adapting to the material.

My advice, like I just said, finish reading an entire subsection first then do the problem you can do then reread the same subsection if lost then do more problems if you can then move on to the next subsection and repeat. Honestly, reading a whole subsection and understanding it in a whole day is a great amount of progress. What I would do, with a certain mathematical methods textbook by Altland, mathematics for physics by altland, I just read the entire first half of the curriculum which was half of the book, half of the book is one single semester, then I started to do the problems by going back and reading the subsections associated for the problem, that way I don't feel the need to read everything again.

For analysis just finish reading the entire chapter first, take 2 or 3 days reading the entire chapter or however long and start doing the problems for that chapter, for each individual subsection. It takes away the pressure of having to read an entire text once you read and only focused on reading 40 to 50 pages at once.

You learn more from doing anyway, so read first and try to understand as much, then go back and calculate or prove.
