It's a product of a system which became more and more complex through evolution, and from such a complex system, consciousness was formed, or is a byproduct of it. Eventually, a computer will be fast and complex enough to simulate intelligence perfectly. Something tells me that this is all humanity cares about - AI being "good enough" instead of actually conscious.
