Why the fuck is differential notation like that? Nobody ever bothered to explain why it's like that and now it bothers me to no end. Please end my suffering /sci/

First example should be pretty clear - the limiting ratio of a small finite change in a function and its argument. What's wrong with that?

Second form is probably for ease of notation when you have many derivatives, to avoid too many fraction-looking terms
