Why the fuck does this book use letters instead of numbers for things like chapter, section, example markers?

Who the fuck would go to chapter M section VO subsection PQL and look at example HHM? I couldn't even look at the math part of the book because the numbering/lettering/whatever the fuck they are going is so bad.
