Yet there is no evolutionary advantage in thinking of these birdies as offspring. But they are pretty childlike and I do have the desire to protect children. Of course evolution says I need to protect my own children but why would I think protecting other children is any beneficial to me? Can evolution explain why I like feeding birds or other animals?

you see birbs as children because your brain recognizes the complete non-threat and defenseless nature of it. Very much unlike the typical response to a snake, spider, or mountain lion.

everyone's conscious psyche is emotional, this isnt up for debate, some people are autistic stoic brick walls but most perceive the world often in emotional reaction; our brain, our subconscious uses emotions to communicate with the high up decision making conscious layer
