If you have X number of people dying at rate r and then Y number of them are vaccinated, and being vaccinated means you are less likely to catch/spread/die from covid (that is, Y vaccinated people die at rate s where s<r). Then you now have only X-Y people dying at rate r and Y people dying at rate s
X*r > (X-Y)*r+Y*s if s<r (and s must be less than r is the vaccine is said to be effective).
