The religious right used to be the drooling retards as it was the default position and the path of least resistance to go along to get along. That drastically changed with millennials and zoomers however and now the dogmatic cathedral of neo-liberalism is the default position and where all the drooling apes are on the political spectrum. Everyone with a triple digit IQ would be embarrassed to claim to be part of the left or a "liberal" today even though their political ideas and policies would be traditionally considered to be on the left of the political spectrum. Really stupid droolers decided common sense and intelligence themselves are now "far right." So they did the job for the righties for them.
So the short answer is it swings like a pendulum. Smart people are generally moire centrist than anything else and when the extremist retards take control of one side or the other they just jump ship and switch allegiances.
