now, if I'm being really technical, it doesn't "measure" anything in the way that eg a scale measures your weight down to the gram. it generates a statistical construct, IQ, which is strongly correlated with your performance on every other mental task, which we take as an indicator of general intelligence aka the g factor which is implicated in every mental task but particularly in well-designed IQ tests.
in turn, this g factor is positively and independently associated with a lot of outcomes that people tend to care about, eg educational attainment, income, life expectancy, credit score, safe driving etc.
note that it's possible for one to be intelligent but still a total incompetent fuckup. you can be extremely quick-witted and accurate but if you have no attention span or executive function you're going to go through life like a subhuman.
