I feel the definitions are vague and are just rephrasing in layman terms. i.e. what you would say to an annoying undergrad so that he "understands" whats going on.

Perhaps im an idiot, but it seems to me this definition is so vague that any numberline can be given a 'label'. Unless there is some unique way of labeling that is not described in the paper, im not seeing what makes this definition sensical.

I feel no obligation to read further.
I honestly feel the real line should be defined as the smallest set that contains the naturals, which is a field and closed under cauchy limits.

Any other definition seems misguided imho

what is even ment by this? there are so many notions of dimension that you can not just write 1D without specification.
one dimensional as what?? a vectorspace over the reals?? this is a completely illegal thing to do when defining the reals.

There is no such thing as "the topology" of the real numbers in the first place.
There is a usual topology which is given by the metric. And there are lots others.
The author has seen a definition of "neighborhood of infinity" somewhere, and he was
obviously unable to understand it.
