I think the driving force behind the trend is vaccinated people are more likely to be emboldened by feeling like they’re protected and go out into areas of high transmission like enclosed concerts, restaurants, etc, and unknowingly spread the virus.
Whereas the likelihood of the unvaccinated spreading it in these locations is far less given 1) they’re less likely to go out if they have symptoms which they’re more likely to display and 2) the barrier of entry is more strict since they have to demonstrate they tested negative for covid.
If we were to require testing regardless of vaccination status, the infection rates would look far worse than what we’re seeing now. However, a better metric to consider would be hospitalizations relative to infections; rather than just positive cases alone.
If you’re old and/or fat and/or living with a weak immune system, these shots are absolutely beneficial given they’re only good at reducing symptoms. For everyone else; the payoff is far more risky.
