They don't understand physics beyond basic Newtonian mechanics and a first course of quantum mechanics.
They don't know the underlying mechanisms of how any of their equipment works, nor how to build it nor fix any malfunctions.
All they know is how to operate the equipment and how to read off the data and manipulate it into a best fit curve.

I also have a bachelors in ME (mechatronics, specifically) and I can do pretty much everything he can. Not because it was taught in university, but because I picked up programming on my own, went above and beyond the course requirements on electronics, and had mandatory internships every year as part of the soviet style engineering education - starting from the shop floor all the way up to the design engineer's office. So I picked up machining skills on the job as a manufacturing technician.

An apprenticeship where you learn to build and operate steam engines. If you were good enough that made you an engineer. Its normal, once upon a time surgeries were made by barbers since they had razors, doctors thought the body was yucky and would not want to touch anyone, just stand in the room and prescribe some medicine.

We did this even in chemical engineering (in particular an obligatory accelerared technician course over our freshman summer that didn't even count towards GPA, but we got full certification in 6 weeks for shit that normally takes 2 years). We also did motor+panel wiring, welding and basic electronics (though we did much more in second year EE).

Anyway never used any of that shit in a real job, but it made me look down on techie blue collar snowflakes even more.

Is this true or are you guys memeing? Somehow I got it into my head that they're these mythical creatures that on top of being experts in physics they also have enough eletrical and mechanical engineering expertise to design and custom make their own experimental hardware, which is why they look down on everyone else.

It sounds more like you're treating the practical skills of designing and building electromechanical equipment as some sort of magical skill that is either on or off for any given person. In reality you can just learn it by doing, and use all kinds of intermediate level assemblies as the pieces in your designs.

The workshop is useless btw
You could teach a kid to use a lathe in like 5minutes

Its true. They are not any mythical creatures. As an experimentalist, most of your time is spent pushing buttons in the lab and writing grant applications and papers.

And if you are beond a post-doc, you arent even in the lab anymore.

People with practical skills get filtered out in the education process, since everything is math focused, while in reality, Shop class is one of the most important skill of an experimentalist.

You act as if its just learning 2 or 3 things. You need to tinker with dozens of different fields, that takes time and money. It isnt about just learning to weld. Phd students are young, broke and busy, the opposite requirements for wisdom. Many are also ideologically opposed to learning things not related to their ultra narrow surrogate activity.

4 credits worth more less on manufacturing process fundamentals which is just a bunch of endless algebra equations for various processes (gets tricky if you are taking the stress and strain placed on the material into account because you have to know what to do with all the equations). There was a 1 credit lab with it too where we did the hands on part of what we we learning. Stuff like injection molding, casting, milling, 3d printing, CNC, die press etc.

It sounds cool but really it was just an extra thing to do every week.

My uni made it an easy A class but basically that class + programming is Stuff Made Here's entire channel.
