If you optimize the surface area of a cylinder inside of a sphere you end up with (1+root(5))pir^2

1+root(5) is the golden ratio.

Perhaps it has a similar reason as to why using triangles helps you measure circumference to pi, or using squares helps you calculate the measurement of triangles?
