Yes. Hikaru Nakamura, second best chess player is a pretty normal IQ, with talent in memory. He just has a good work ethic. Feynman had an above average, but not necessarily genius IQ, but loved mathematics and physics. Additionally, many geniuses are bored and underperform in primary education, but then shine when they make it to difficult courseloads.

I was trash in highschool but did really well in college and from my prospective pretty good at my job. Computer engineer btw. "Gifted" children could literally just mean your brain developed quicker then others so when you are an adult you can just be as retarded as everyone else or even more retarded. Probably could be even lazier as you developed that behavior as you could more easily complete the work or scrap by.
