Are University ranking a meme? How are there so many successful scientists that came from literally no name universities all throughout Europe/Asia?

I can’t speak for US, but in my country scientists/engineers from the best universities go into defense industry with lots of red tape so you don’t hear about them a lot, if at all.

Partially this, but even more so because university rankings are completely skewed to favor anlgo-American (mainly American) universities. Germany has tons if amazing universities. France and Russia also have a few, but not as many as Germany. Scandanavia too. And even Latin America and East Asian has some good unis. UNAM is probably better than a lot of US state unis, but their rankings dont reflect that.

British and American universities are usually just at the top, it doesn't matter what metric is chosen for rankings.

Yes. Non-anglos universities focus on education rather than publishing papers, that's why they are 'no-name'. In Europe research centers are usually separated from universities.
The people doing the university rankings assume wrongly that the anglo model is universal and give an insane weight to paper publications.

Saclay university was created on purpose to top this ranking by the French government. They were tired of seeing French universities getting badly ranked so they grouped research centers with the best universities to create an anglo-style university.
That shows the credibility of these rankings.

You have to choose increasingly arbitrary metrics to get Anglo universities out of top 5. Nobody collects the best minds of the world like those universties. I know it makes you uncomfortable to see Anglo unis at the top, but foreigners are 50% of what makes them the best.

In US university rankings are a total meme, I know it because I have worked with people that make these type of meme rankings, these rankings are literally advertisement propaganda.

It's a similar business to credit rating.

All rankings are arbitrary. None of them are 'good'. It always depends of the weight you give to each criteria. You can basically create rankings and make them tell whatever you want them to say.
The quality of education is not measured by these rankings. What is measured is their capacity to extract money from rich Chinese students.

Even foreign rankings have them at the top. It could be dumb to rank universities, but if you are, they'll be at the top. The metric does not matter.

they kept telling me this shit and when I graduated from a local university which is not ranked at all lmao (but actually had world known professors), I kept giving excuses to recuiters from EU on why I picked this uni and why I stayed in this unknown uni...

They're the best tools for turning the low IQ people into slaves for the actual geniuses. Universities are training you to become a workhorse, to do the grunt work. Not to make the important discoveries.

I'm joking about low IQ but there are only a few literal absolute INSANE tier geniuses per generation, and they would move science forward with mediocre academic tutoring, because they are more advanced than the system tutoring them.

In 2021 an actual genius may post on boards like this just because... But they are so insanely rare... They are the few names out of billions which are recognized for centuries to come. It is not shameful to not be one of them, they're rarer than celebrities or billionaires.

Universities teach what these people discover. They are far beyond current academia because they are the people who shape future academia that we have not currently reached.

theres no such thing as gruntwork in science, there are a lot of disgruntled people with scientific job titles who are doing research in lazy, low effort, inobservant fashion because they only wanted to be in the sciences for ulterior motives (i.e. tv made it look unrealistically neat-o) and who don't have any real interest in learning. when a smart scientist and a soifaggot with a degree do the same research they come up with different results.
