What the fuck is wrong with college students now? I teach a general chemistry lab and the kids expect class to be EXACTLY the same as all other lab groups. If one other section does something different, they complain. Why?

Instruction and teaching is an experience that tailors and fits to the abilities of both the teacher and these students. What students today want out of a class can be equivalent to the recitation of a textbook.

Students come straight out of highschool not knowing how to solve for x in an M1V1 equation. Some students were AP and honors. You have to tailor the experience to meet the needs of the class.

Not sure if this is just a burger thing but my labs are minimum 20.
This applies for an upper division lab I run. Actually come to think of it, those students are even worse.

It's probably because they learned the material as-is from class and are too lazy to apply it differently, so it boggles their minds. It's weird because the lab portion is so much more enjoyable and helps to solidify the info better, since you're actually applying everything in action. Other anons mentioned cheating as being a factor, and that's probably true to some degree too.
The lab portions were my main saving grace with gen chem, as our instructor just assigned videos and lab assignments through an outside source, then threw us to the wolves

What trips me up too is how fucking dumb they can be sometimes. I made it clear to all the students at semester start that all online reports are run through a plagiarism checker. Today I booked one student for 100% plagiarism on a report (the legit kind where he copy pasted the whole report from 2 old ones,) gave him a 0 and offered him to submit it again with a deduction. Come to the second attempt, it's 73% plagiarism with the answers just being copy pasted from a different report.

Tried to dangle the institutional action threat to get him to stop, only to find on the next report (I'm 2 reports behind) he plagiarized again, also copy pasting a bunch of shit.

Idk what the fuck to do. Do I actually go forward with the IA? I mean the kid's dumb as shit for doing that but I just wanted to use the IA as a deterrent, I didn't think I might actually have to go through with it, and honestly I don't wanna have to potentially ruin a student's career just for being a dumbfuck.

I've had to have the plagiarism talk with at least one student in every section I've ever taught, and for all of them, just a warning and a harsh grade penalty was enough to get them to stop after the first time, no IA needed.

I've never run into a student as dense as this kid. He also half assed his reports compared to his classmates, he rarely if ever listens to my comments on his reports, and his flaws are highlighted even more by his lab partner, who is pretty much his exact opposite.

I know I shouldn't feel bad, but I guess I just like to see all my students be able to succeed. Too much of a softie, I guess. I'll talk to my faculty mentor and see how to proceed.

We are just trying to scrape by and do the assignments and then we immediately brain dump all the information you meticulously thought about how to convey.
Don't blame us either, blame the retarded university system that overloads us with 130 fucking credit hours just to get a degree that doesn't even prepare you for the workforce.

Yeah you guys are absolutely right. I've just never had to administer such a harsh punishment on someone before so it's pretty uncomfortable for me. But I really do want to become a better teacher and I have to learn how to do this kind of thing to accomplish that.

It's sort of as if you had a supercomputer cluster connected with dialup. More and more effort is used to push as much information through the tiny bandwith as possible, you basically only get abstract description of what you see hear, etc. That also means no new concepts can be learned, as there is just no way to push them throgh, so people are stuck with what they learned by 5 years old. This leads to the excess material taught as mentioned here >>13858006, as basically you need to go from A->G->F->C->B, as the route from A to be can't be learned anymore, and you need to describe everything so that it can be understood by people with the abstraction of a toddler.

They complain because they're being graded against each other and if the lab groups are different they're being graded on different shit. University shouldn't be like this, but that's the way things are and so the students are correct, it really isn't fair. If the sessions are different, one of the groups will have the easiest session, and their grades will be unfairly inflated.

Bro you're just teaching a class for money. There's no reason to make anything different over the years at all.
When I'm teaching ODEs I'm going to use the same tests every year with zero difference because I don't give a shit.
If someone can seriously cheat my memorizing every answer exactly and the work that goes with it then they know how to do the problem and I don't care. Props to their autistic memory.

I used to TA a first-year course for a couple of years. Some of them genuinely didn't understand a lot of the basic stuff.
It's usually like that for the first year students and a lot end up dropping out or getting filtered anyway, but others just power through everything by memorizing. I'd believe that the drop out rate is a lot lower in countries like the USA, where there's a lot of money involved.
