Regardless, physics research takes not just the intellectual capacity to do higher mathematics, that most posters are trying to emphasize, but also a lot of curiosity and especially insight, which however, is a kind of intellectual skill, as it involves trying to find out which preconceptions one has, and observing the universe with fresh eyes (which involves some big dose of not just intuition but working memory to make the whole explicit), but it can't be merely an intellectual skill for the world of physics is broad, and without sufficient exploration, there will be not enough room for the synthesis of novel theories.
