>>13855931 mentions, Northern Australia is notorious for poverty. London was built close to the ocean since it made it much easier to travel from place-to-place and trade was a lot easier too, the southeast became the centre of the UK. Most of the wealth is concentrated around that area, with London being the richest city in West Europe despite the UK having 9 of the poorest cities too. The north was seen as a cold and wet wasteland for peasantry. As early back as Roman times, they were looked down upon as being brutish and uncivil. It's still like this today. Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, Leeds, Newcastle, Carlisle, Blackpool, Ashington, Grimsby. All of which are Northern cities with ridiculously high poverty rates. It's seen as strange for a Northerner to go to a university like Oxford or Cambridge. Northerners I've met who are smart all tend to move down south anyway. Things are changing of course, but the region continues to suffer from poverty. But what makes me curious is how they are so happy despite this. Always offering a hand to help others, cheering and dancing even when on the dole. Is it ignorance, or something else?
