Why are mathematicians so bad at writing and programming? I teach both of these subjects in my freetime and have found that engineers and mathematicians have no sense for simplicity and clarity.

Simplicity and clarity comes from experience and dedication. Unless you've studied and/or have programmed for years, with the intent of improving yourself at programming you will never achieve these two.

Because they actually try to write it. CS majors copy the entire code from the internet and spend a half hour renaming variables and reordering to pass it off as theirs.

It's pretty much completely raw intelligence. The higher their intelligence, the more they invent their own code and the less they depend on memorized stuff. As an analogy, an intelligent person will go directly from A to B,where a less intelligent person will go A->C, C->D, D->B, because they know those three routes already and used together they take them to the desired goal.

thats what the camel book says you're supposed to do to be a good programmer. reinventing the wheel is a waste of time and doesn't accomplish anything, if someone else already wrote the code you need, use that instead of egotistically writing your own necessary version of the same thing.

It honestly explains entire fields even like 'machine learning'.

That's antithetical thinking to math. Recreating the wheel allows you to fully understand the mechanism and appreciate developments
