What's the science behind music that triggers nostalgia, even though you don't really have a personal connection to that song?

Music is a powerful memory device. I recall a documentary on hbo of Alzheimer’s patients who were so out of it they could hardly speak. But then play them a song from their younger years and it’s like they snap out of a trance and know the song word for word. The joy it brings to their eyes to remember again. Weird stuff

maybe it actually is their nostalgia, but not for the time period, but things they saw when they were growing up. for example i was born in the 90s, but i have this nostalgia feeling for the 80s when i hear/see 80s media, probably because when i was younger i played Vice City and saw 80s movies and i remember them fondly. So perhaps its just nostalgia for our own childhoods of media consumption?

It's an old and very popular song. It's been around for ages so you make connections to other times you've heard it in your life. Newer songs don't make you feel nostalgic.
