What is pop-math descending to? Why do they constantly make videos about surface level memes instead of increasing the public's knowledge of sound mathematical reasoning?

It goes back to their motivation: Gibs. They need gibs and you get no gibs if your video doesn't spread.
To spread, it has to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
To appeal to the lowest common denominator, it has to be as surface level as possible because their brain literally starts to hurt the moment it goes too deep.

This. If you want to see actually good math YouTubers I suggest checking out "Nikolaj-K" he actually goes over math papers and talks to you like he's your colleague. Normies would never get this, subsequently he doesn't get a lot of views but his goal is not gibs.
