Why don't wisdom teeth fit in the jaw anymore?

Is it because wisdom teeth used to replace other teeth that fell out, or because our jaws are too small?

The former. I remember hearing about people in third world nations with wisdom teeth 3 spots in, since they had so many others fall out. Evolutionarily speaking, losing teeth is super common so the prevailing theory is that wisdom teeth are there to bank on the idea that some would fall out.

Both. Ancient people wore their teeth a lot faster, but also had larger jaws because the jaws grew better when used a lot during childhood/teenage years.
Also getting tons of upper airway infection while in "childcare" will cause probems due to mouthbreathing, incorrect tongue resting etc.
