The advantage of using the y chromosome would be that there would be a 3:1 ratio of girls to boys born, but 1/3 would be futas. Now, all we have to do is isolate the genes for genital development, and then attach receptors to them so they can be turned on exactly how testosterone attaches to receptors. Ecdysterone, a "molting hormone" in arthropods, could be used as a ligand since it serves no purpose in the human body as steroid, and it's pretty easy to manufacture from cholesterol. It's also been used experimentally in animals to "switch on" genes already, so it's a perfect candidate for becoming a "third sex hormone".
