If you wanna get good, just start with a general overview of chemistry.. after that just go in depth. Don't forget to add a healthy dose of mathematics (llinear algebra, calculus) and physics (mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism) etc etc.
Also if you wanna get good in a lab, you learn by doing, and you really shouldn't learn by doing independantly as I doubt you can ensure your safety
