I like Math and Physics in college because I can just sit in a corner of the library and do all of the book problems and then get a 100% on the test. Would I prefer a programming job (my school places lots of people at Google/Microsoft) or would I prefer going into academia for math/physics?

I was the same way. I went and got a PhD in theoretical physics. After school I hated teaching so I got a programming/research job.

If you want a job where you have semi autonomy you need a PhD. It's like a license to direct your own research essentially.

Programming is only fun if you’re actually working on cool shit which is like .1% of programming. So if you’re smart enough to get one of those positions then he’ll yeah go for it.

Not OP but I am also in a similar position.
What exactly do you mean by social skills?
If I am "teaching" something, or doing a presentation I become really extroverted, confident etc. but in general I am not really good at networking and reaching out to people. Is that a deal breaker?

im in the same place and came to the conclusion that research will make me happy because discovering new stuff makes me happy and programming in some company would probably be not discovering new interesting stuff
