The MEME of "pathogenic contagious viruses" thrives today in large part due to institutional power - the myth of viruses grants government massive power and influence, it's basically a mythology that serves the thriving of a centralised state of some sort. If the NIH, NAIAD, Gates, etc didn't exist, even with large medical bureaucracies, you wouldn't have such a widespread belief in viruses as the cause of illness.

I do believe the notion of 'contagion' is a popular superstition, though which would exist regardless, it's basically something that appeals to a surface-level 'intellect' looking to determine causality.
