Let $a$ and $b$ be members of certain set $S$ of elements that can be combined (operated together). Each member of the set has a enumerable sequence of characteristics $(C_1,C_2,\dots,C_n)$ .
After operating two elements of $S$ , $a$ and $b$ , the result is another element $c$ of $S$ , which has inherited it's characteristics from the original elements:

where $\odot$ is some operation that determines the way the characteristics are combined together.

Let's define an application $f(x,y):x\odot y \to z$ where $x,t \in S$ .
If $f$ is a biyection, then the operation $\odot$ is reversible and the combination between elements of $S$ can be reversed.

you can combine 2 water droplets to obtain another water droplet. It volumes will add, the conentration of any diluted thing in them (if any) will combine to obtain a new concentration of those things in the new water droplet. You cannot reverse the process to obtain the 2 original water droplets with their original concentrations and volumes (and other characteristics) from the combined droplet obtained.

Maybe you can obtain the original elements $a,b$ starting from their combination $c$ but it will imply another path or sequence of processes that involve more energy and different aggregation states that originated the resulting combination.
In this case the process could be said to be invertible, to obtain originating elements starting from their combined element.

If the application $f$ implies a mutation off the set of characteristics $\{C_i:i \in I\}$ (adding new ones, or eliminating other ones), the process is no reversible or not invertible. This is, you cannot unburn burned stuff.

while that is technically true, that is quite misleading. You're ignoring the idea of the unit of reference. You see the drop in the end is not equal to at least one of either the drops in the beginning.
This is still true when you take 1 + 1 = 2
2 is only one number.
thus from a different frame: 1 + 1 = 1
this will almost make 192010302932949200302030203020302032003023912932013213 = 1 from that frame.
What you're doing is no longer the same thing as our agreed upon elementary arithmetic, where 1++ != 1
