What the fuck, why isn’t the next technology as impactful as the internet and smartphones more talked about here? Clustered-Regularly-Interspaced-Short-Palindromic-Repeats. If you were able to change any genes in any organism, what would it be? I’d start with giving mice rhino horns

CRISPR just isn't that good at stuffing one organism's genes into another. it's for small edits (since damaging a gene until it stops working doesn't actually need large sized changes that also counts as a small edit)
I love genetic engineering and I'm trying to find a good use for the tech we currently have at our disposal, but rushing to CRISPR for everything is just not where we are right now, at least

good question!
depends on what you wanna do. to my knowledge if you wanna remove a gene's function CRISPR is your best bet, and we've developed/found variant cas9 that perform different functions, and cas9 that binds a target but does nothing once there, useful when you attach it to another component.
between all that, CRISPR is a good base for:
damaging a location in the genome (usually to render a gene non-functional)
repressing or activating transcription for a gene
changing a single base at a location
also having refreshed my memory CRISPR can be used to stick genes into a cell, but you're relying on the cell's natural DNA repair mechanisms to do the job, so it only works around 10% of the time. if you're working out of a petri dish then separating out the ones that took it might work, but definitely not for a living organism. when it does work you get full integration into the genome of the cell, which is sweet
if you wanna get a gene into something the standard is still to use a plasmid or a virus though. there are tricks to make these more effective, like adding a chromosomal sequence to convince the cell to copy/repair your addition

It is a very usefull tool in research, we use it to knock out specific genes and see what changes happen on a molecular level. It has been incredibly usefull to ID and anotate a shitton of genes. So once again, it is a very usefull tool specifically for what it is good for. And that is mostly DSBs and knockouts.
Why don't we use it for inserting genes? We do, but not very often. We have different and in many ways better (and in some ways worse) tools for that.

We can do some interesting stuff with all the gene edditing tools we have though, but we are not at the "we can change anything at any time in any place" level yet. But just dicking around with hox genes can be really interesting. Google bithorax or antennapedia or take a developmental biology course. You can add and subtract limbs like LEGO.

Just by eliminating genetically determined illnesses this could save a country vast sums. I think I'd start there.
If you want to go all out you could thicken the cortex which might increase intelligence, probably at the expense of a longer childhood. extending vision to near infrared is also a possibility.

You would love the research my girlfriend is doing. Her area of experties is stemcell biology and neurology. She is working on modeling neurodegenerative disease on human neuroorganoids. Basically growing few mm human brains in jars. Those little fuckers are freaky too. They grow retina in random places (basically a bunch of little eyes).
My research is fun too (and really morbid), and genetics related, but not genetic engineering specifically.

She doesn't know. Apparently there are conflicting opinions in the community as to whether or not these organoids think. We were discussing methods by which we could discovere if they did. Maybe grow them around a 3D array of electrodes like in the experiments where they tought a 2D rat neuron culture grown on electrodes to fly a plane.
My research involves predicting when people will die. I get a bunch of mtDNA samples, look at some specific markers (i am not allowed to tell you what because it is not published yet) and based on that i determine how many of them will die of old age in the next 6 months. We have a contract with the people whos DNA i work with, so we get informed when they die, and what killed them.

For that specific problem I’d predict the solution to be endowing cars with some sort of AI location system that prevents cars from getting too close to each other to avoid collision. But I’m sure some people wil be interested in having eyes in the back of their neck. Will probably look unaesthetic though

I really don't know whether or not these organoids can be considered mature. I really only understand part of it, i'd ask my gf but she is not here right now. I do know that organoids do have myelin cells, and that myelinisation plays an important part in brain maturation. I'd guess they are as conscious as any of us were at around 6-8 weeks into embryonic development. If they are more conscious than that, well yeah. Thats kind of a terrrifying thought.
As to my research, yes we get DNA from people 70 years old and older. (we used a full range of ages to set a baseline, and are working at the old end now) The head of the department thinks he identifyed a new mechanism of ageing, which he thinks is the key mechainsm. My research is to help prove (or disprouve) his hypothesis. Resaults so far are promising.

Infrared vision is perhaps a better solution until aesthetic standards change. Better hearing would also help, too many have bad hearing.
I have abnormally good night vision and hearing, it took me many years to discover not everyone were the same.

That is a massively complicated undertaking. It is not currently possible. In theory, maybe. In practice, probably not any time soon. Neurosecretory cells are brain contorled and produice componds. So maybe if you took skin cells, made induiced pluripotent stem cells from them, modifyed them to secret your compound of choice, and implanted them into your brain... But you still wouldn't have a mechanism by which to activate it. Maybe if we put it in a region identifyed to be associated with a specific thought... maaaaaybe.

There were a few cases where I clearly heard things and people and others couldn't hear anything. Also I was driving and had some passengers, and they complained I was driving with normal car head light. I could see fine, they saw only darkness, so just for them I had to turn on the high beam.
When I did national service I upset an exercise because I could hear and see the enemy long before I was meant to. The officers were not happy about that.
