pic related is far and away the most common critique for how math and chemistry is taught by students. Why is this the case? Why is the difference between what is taught and what's expected come exam time so different?
How would you design a math or chemistry course so this wouldn't be the case?

my biggest issue with how I was taught chemistry is the very wishy-washy hand wavey, pretentious holier-than-thou way they treated all of the "balancing" stuff.
"How do you balance a chemical equation?"
"You just have to get a feel for it"
"But there has to be a systematic way to do it"
"No there isn't. You just have to get good at it"
same shit with redox reactions, Hess' law, empirical formulas, practically every topic in your basic undergrad STEM mandated chemistry courses - "um sweaty you just have to get good at it;)"

you can balance any chemical equation, work out any redox thing, anything to do with Hess's law - with just a fucking matrix and some determinants

The professors never made the connection and they use it as a barrier to entry to maintain some prestige to entry level chemistry. My chemistry professors got very very cantankerous with me when I showed them the method and forbid me from using it.

You only see this on the lower level math courses like calculus 1-3. As far as upper level courses depending on how advanced your school is the test can eithee be easier or equal to the difficulty of the material, but rarely is it more difficult.

The reason they do this with calculus is to weed out the people who rote memoeize everything. Calculus is not a hard subject, and if you need to rote memorize it then you don't deserve to pass.

You're taught the tools you can use to solve math problems, and on the exam you get a new problem to use the tools on. Students who want the exam to be repeats of problems they've already done with slightly different numbers are lazy retards

This, the students are supposed to transfer what they have learned to new problems. Anything else is just rote memorizing.
Of course, sometimes the people who make the exercises etc. are different from the ones who come up with the exams. Then discrepancies can coccur. It is then the students' task to inform the responsible persons who should check this and adjust their programme.

There is nothing wrong with the curriculum. The students are complaining because they can't pass the exams but that's the entire point of those exams - to weed out those who are incapable of abstract thought and applying things they learned in another context. If they were not filtered by the exam they would end up wasting years of their lives trying to succeed at something they have no chance to succeed in.
