What do you recommend to read papers and books in PDF format? I used to read on my monitor all the time but find it very tiring. Are iPads the only good way?

iPad + iCloud Default Reader served me well. The other stuff on the App Store is usually full of ads, if it doesn't work for you I'd honestly consider just writing a quick app to do it

Yes, the screen grab is from the Adobe Android app. My point is its not very good. The ability to reformat PDFs on the fly to a portable readable format is capped as per arrow demonstrates.

Get an ereader; I recommend Kobo.
e-ink is superior to led screens when you're reading a lot since there's no eye strain.

Seconded, I use a Kobo, it's great for pdfs. Also use PerfectViewer on a tablet where you need to see colour.

With a smartphone/tablet/etc. Ereaders are a scam, especially when they cost more than a fully featured phone. The only advantage of a ereader is that they have longer batteries which is useful if electricity is a rarity in your country. Third world countries can't afford ereaders, so they are primarily marketed towards retards who have big money but believe in being "electricity independent." Which is a crock of nonsense.

If you want to buy a small unresponsive pieces of shit ereader and it will cost $150-$300+.
If you want to buy something that has a decent response rate, it will cost you $500+.

For those money, you can buy a 10 inch tablet with full color, 7+ batteries, full wifi, sd card slots, wifi, gps, fully responsive, etc for <$100.

Had a quick look in my local online electronics shop, and there are only a couple of models over $500. They're the same brand (Onyx), and are the fancy, big screen models that allow you to draw diagrams with an e-stylus. A decent ereader like mine costs about $150. The cheap, crappy ones are $75.
Maybe it's different in your country

I use my tablet. But the 7 inch screen is too small and my eyes still get strained. My next purchase will probably be a eInk reader with a 10+ inch screen
