Third hand smoke?

So I had a bit of a debate with someone about third hand smoke. I smoke on some days like 3 cigs, and I do it outside. I understand 3rd hand smoke as the residue left over from when the combustible material condenses and sticks to walls and shit in a room. My room mate was trying to say that even when I come inside and I smell slightly like tobacco that he can't breath and it bothers his asthma. Is there any science to back this up? I tried to say it's probably just the smell that's bothering him and not actually impeding his breathing, in other words placebo. But he got defensive and insisted I was being an asshole. Lay it on me. If he is right, then I'll just vape or chew the gum. I don't feel like turning this into a whole thing.
