I've tried making my own research but I can't find a consistent answer. Some studies suggest males are smarter on average while others suggest there is no statistically significant difference. Which is it?

When the author of you pop-sci article says "no statistically significant difference", she means "there is a statistically significant but small difference in the average intelligence", which actually means "there is a huge difference in the higher end of the spectrum".

Males are smarter than women with an average of a 3-5 IQ lead in every cognitive test that doesn't remove test items favoring men. Tests with actual real world implications such as university admission tests and various cognitive tests for executive level positions frequently have this disparity between men and women. The Swedish SAT(SweSAT) used for university admissions in Sweden has a 0.2 standard deviation gap between men and women when various factors are corrected for, or a 3 IQ point difference. This is with a test design strategy aimed at reducing the difference between men and women, so the real difference in terms of g is most likely higher.

This effect is almost entirely caused by the sexual dimorphism of height/size differences between the sexes, as women of average male height (above average female height) have the same average IQ as men. Women have a lower IQ spread than men due to the various common X chromosome-linked traits that only have a heterozygous benefit(much more likely in males as there is no second X chromosome to attenuate the positive intelligence trait). Same goes for X-linked genes that have a negative impact on intelligence, hence why women are much less represented than men at the bottom and the top of individual intelligence.

Likely yes but knowing it makes no difference since it wont change anything. If males are not smarter then it also makes no difference, the world stays the same. You also cant use this knowledge in any personal project.

not that that's all there is to life, but it is a part of success if you ask most people.
so there must be some component of smart that is not IQ
