Think physically - why would the universe know what a table of numbers is? It knows what a rotation is, it knows what a lorentz transformation is, it knows what the moment of inertia is for some body rotated in some way, it knows what curvature is and what parallel transport is, it knows what the evolution of a quantum system without it losing information is. All those things are physical phenomena, a cup doesnt know what a 3x3 orthogonal matrix when you spin it around, neither do the rest of those phenomena. However, the universe does know what a linear map from R^3 to R^3 is that doesnt change lengths and angles.
That being said, when you upgrade from vector spaces to modules, you get actually deep shit - vector bundles and whatever.
