Belief has always been at the core of discovery's pursuit. Religion, Politics, Philosophy, Belief in some reason to advance, it goes hand-in-hand with advancing.
Your problem isn't that belief in and of itself but in it's application of and for what reason.
Or rather, it's pessimism of or optimism for ourselves.
