Is the rate that which space expands a constant or increasing? If it's increasing, does that mean eventually the rate of expansion will be so fast even atoms will be torn apart by it?

I think dark energy has been suggested to explain why expansion does appear to be increasing. And yes, that could mean that eventually atoms are torn apart. It's called The Great Rip.

Besides, we wouldn't even be able to make the trip to the nearest black hole. It's approximately 1120 +- 70 light years away from Earth.
