You can endure a lot of pain while having a reason to endure it, but enduring monotony of an existence without meaning or purpose or any joy for ages is harder even with no pain involved. Of course it may happen that the individual lives of your friends or spouse or family do not constitute any profound meaning for you, then of course their deaths are less unpleasant than excruciating physical pain. I have personally experienced both scenarios and excruciating physical pain(kidney disease, migraines, extreme paranoia and minor hallucinations, broken bones, etc), so my observation is correct at least in my case.
