Viruses are the guardians of diversity. When a particular feature becomes too common, a virus can adapt to attack it, and elliminate the overbred variants. There would likely be little to no diversity without pathogenic organisms, but only one or few locally optimal organisms. We need the viruses so that we can restore our diversity. (not in the globohomo sense) People are too same for a species, two chimps from different shores of a river are more genetically different than two different human races.
