>>13824981>What should graduate students look out for when picking their phd advisors?Aside from picking someone who's interested in the things you are, look for someone you somewhat trust and respect and who somewhat trusts and respects you. Going to a genius is going to do you no good if they're going to throw you under the bus.
>Can you trust them? No, there's a very high chance they'll phone it in because it's just another chore for them. However you can trust some advisors more than others. Some will be neglectful, others will be toxic. Obviously the former is better. If you're lucky, you might find a genuinely good advisor you can actually trust.
>How often do they try to sabotage or give advice on bad faith?Depends on the advisor. Just listen to your gut feeling. Every prof I've had a bad feeling about turned out a hack and/or sociopath. Don't ignore red flags just because a prof is a genius, has a good reputation, or whatever. As said earlier, having such an advisor is going to do you no good if they'll end up screwing you over.
>Be honest anons, was your phd worth it?Ask again in a few years. I'm feeling good about it so far.
