what are /sci/'s thoughts on the idea pushed that a great theory (and possibly the ultimate theory unifying all of reality) should be fundamentally simple? why should reality be simple? i dont see how this makes any sense

There isn't any reason to it, beyond it appearing to be true. The fact that humans are able to understand the atom or subatomic particles or the geometry of the universe and find beauty and purpose in doing so is a mystery of sorts. Best you can do is just engage with it and appreciate it yourself..
