Chemistry question here.
My bathroom sink was 95% clogged. Even after removing the stopper/plug thing it wasn't obvious why it wasn't draining. Pouring boiling water down it from my tea kettle did nothing.
The internet (on many sites) told me of a home remedy: You mix 1/2 cup salt with 1/2 cup baking soda, pour it down the sink drain, wait 15 minutes, then flush with boiling water.
It 100% worked. Clog is gone. But I have no idea why.
Baking soda will dissolve into a weak acid, so I could see why would help with a clog. But why the salt?
