Just started watching Chernobyl, the miniseries that came out a while back. I had to ask, what is radiation and what does it do to you? It looked like those poor russians' skin was melting or something.

I could just google it but it's more fun to ask here. Oh also what are control rods? Why are they so important?

I'll bite.

Radiation is energy transfer coming out of an atom's center (nucleus) or its electron shell. Either a physical particle comes out of the nucleus and hits your atoms and causes damage, or an energy packet comes out of the electron shell and transfers the energy to your atoms.

Particle radiation can fuck you up big time by literally changing the atoms in your body to something else, or making your own atoms radioactive. The energy radiation is immediately painful as hell, similar to getting yourself microwaved.

Control rods absorb neutrons in a nuclear reactor to stop a runaway chain reaction from happening. You can use them to change the power level of the reactor or shut it down. Even after its shut down you still need to cool the reactor because the fuel is radioactive and giving off heat; the radiation never goes away but after a while you can just cool it with natural circulation flow instead of needing to pump water on it all the time.

Radiation is something that is given off by atoms breaking apart. Radiation takes a few different forms. The big ones are:
-Alpha -> Basically hydrogen nucleuses that get spit out. Pretty easy to mitigate, a piece of paper is good enough
-Beta -> Basically an electron that got spit out. Again easy to mitigate, just have a blanket and it won't get through
-Gamma -> VERY high energy photons, will fuck shit up unless you're behind lead shielding
-Neutron -> Basically atom fragments that will get caught by other materials and could become unstable (i.e. cause the catching atom to break apart)
Now, notice that I said two of the radiation types could be shielded with paper/blanket? Well if you breathe it in, bad shit's gonna happen because it can reach living cells. The thing is that when you have atoms breaking apart, you're going to have a LOT of radiation given off because there are just a lot of atoms.
What happens is the radiation enters your body and hits stuff (e.g. DNA) and breaks it. Sometimes it smashes it to pieces, sometimes it only breaks it a little (not enough that your body knows it is broken) and causes the cell to mutate or maybe it doesn't split quite right and causes a tumor or causes the organ to fail.

That's pretty much what was happening. Radiation causes the cells to die...and since we're made of cells, that's bad news for us. The Youtube channel Plainly Difficult goes into more detail.

In a nuclear reactor, there is a chain reaction where Uranium fissions and gives off 3 neutrons. Each of these gets absorbed by a Uranium atom which in turn each give out 3 more neutrons. The control rods reduce the efficiency of the chain reaction so instead of 3 neutrons finding atoms, only 2 of them will or only 1 (i.e. barely sustaining). When the rods are pulled fully out (what the Russians did when they were trying to start it), there is no control and the chain reaction will build quickly with disastrous effects.
