is it wrong to refer to the zeroth element as the first? as i'm sure you're aware many programming languages index from 0 so it's the first element. is it ok in this case?

If it's being labeled as zero because of a programming context, where it would be labeled as the first otherwise, then it's fine. But if it's deliberately labeled as the zeroth element, it's better to refer to it as such. At the end of the day, if you're being consistent it shouldn't matter really.

You refer to it however your audience is used to it. If you're talking to a bunch of programmers about programming, use zeroth. If you're talking to non-programmers about non-programming, use first.
