I'm a mathematics student at a major flagship university. I understand all my classes thoroughly, and rarely do I rely on rote memorization. I am a (the?) top student in all my math classes, and dedicate a lot of time to reading the textbook, proving the theorems myself, doing all the recommended exercises, and then doing any problems that look interesting. Consequently I usually already have the homework done before it is even assigned.
This applies to all my senior level math courses. The lower-level classes such as calculus, diff eq. linear algebra I, are all shit and meant for engineers/scientists. Hated those classes for the reasons stated (memorize, memorize, plug and chug, repeat).
