If it works great, we can start building commercial reactors and feeding them waste processed by a government program, if it doesn't we are stuck with keeping it in holes until we find a better option.
As for throwing it into space that is extremely risky because no matter how safe the rocket is if it goes wrong you have made the ultimate dirty bomb.
